Did you know that nearly 50% of the poisoning cases managed by Pet Poison Hotline involve human medications-both over-the-counter and prescription drugs, and is one of the more common emergency calls that we receive at the veterinary hospital? Sometimes the culprit is a curious dog, but cats get into their share of trouble as well. Other times, pet owners accidentally give their own medications to their pets or try to self-medicate pets with drugs that are safe for people but toxic to pets.
Here is a list of the top 10 human medications pets most frequently ingest to help make sure you keep your pets safely separated from these drugs in your home.
1. NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen. While these medications are safe for people, even one or two pills can cause serious harm to a pet.
2. Acetaminophen (Tylenol). Even though this drug is safe for children, it is not safe for pets, especially cats. One tablet of acetaminophen may be fatal to a cat and in dogs it can lead to liver failure and red blood cell damage.
3. Antidepressants (Cymbalta, Effexor, Celexa...)
4. ADD/ADHD medications
5. Thyroid Hormones
6. Beta-Blockers
7. Benzodiazepines (Ativan, Valium, Xanax)
8. Albuterol
9. ACE inhibitors
10. Birth Control and other estrogen-based drugs
